Towering over the Israelites and casting a long, dark shadow at nearly nine feet tall, Goliath was most certainly an imposing figure and a formidable foe. For forty days and forty nights, the Philistine giant brazenly taunted his enemies while clothed in full armor and challenged them to fight. With hollow taunts and spiteful insults, he stood against the men of Israel and cast fear in the many among him.
Though, he didn’t realize the power of one young man in the crowd. Plainly dressed in a simple tunic stood David in defiance as he confronted the giant. "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied ... today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air ... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel ... it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands."
Emboldened with determination and faith, David slung a small stone at the giant’s head – which remarkably landed on Goliath’s head by way of a chink in his armor. With this simple act of courage, the plain shepherd was able to slay the giant and protect his camp of Christians.
